The Hvar Theater is the first municipal theater in Europe. It is located in the eastern half of the Arsenal building and was opened in 1612. The Hvar Theater has not preserved its original interior due to later reconstructions. The auditorium with loges was built in 1803 when the Theater Society was founded, and its current neo-baroque appearance dates from the turn of the 20th century. Two wall sets have been preserved, as well as a fresco from 1819 which is now on the back wall of the stage, while a fresco depicting the Governor's Palace, made around 1900, was restored and placed on movable panels.
