On the southern segment of the town walls towards the Hvar square, there are two gates. The western one is called Porta Maestra, the main town gate. The gate has a monumental portal in the Gothic style. Above the gate is a preserved machicolation with three double consoles, which is reinforced on the inside by a parapet over a segmental arch. In the 15th century, it was called the Palm Gate - porta del Datallo, after the tall palm tree in the nearby garden of the Paladini Palace, and in the 16th century, the Market Gate - porta del Mercato.
